Fading dreams and new recollections

Dreams and reality are usually seen as opposites. However, a closer look reveals that our own ideas, preconceptions and dreams also influence our perception of reality. The more distant things, processes and people are from us in space or time, the more difficult it becomes to distinguish facts from ideas.

Traum und Realität werden meist als Gegensätze verstanden. Ein genauerer Blick enthüllt jedoch, dass in unsere Auffassungen von der Realität auch die eigenen Ideen, Vorannahmen und Träume einfließen. Je weiter Dinge, Vorgänge und Menschen räumlich oder zeitlich von uns entfernt sind, desto schwieriger wird es, Fakten von Vorstellungen zu unterscheiden.

On October 18, 1824, the “Royal Privileged Berlin Newspaper of State and Scholarly Matters” reported on the voyage of the Prussian merchant ship “Mentor” under the heading “Science and art news”:  

For an ethnographic museum, the construction of which we are still awaiting, many a curious thing has also come along; we only noticed a light dance dress of the Chileans made of bear guts, stuff made of tree bark from the Sandwich Islands, drinking vessels made of gourds, fans made of peacock feathers, helmets made of rushes, weapons, fishing rods and household utensils of various kinds.

However, the “volunteer from the Sandwich Islands” that the mentor had also brought from Hawaiʻi aroused particular interest:

Henry, as he is called, or rather that is what he calls himself, came on board when the mentor docked there and begged to be taken along. They inquired about his family circumstances, he had neither father nor mother, nor anyone else who made claims on him; so he went with them to China, and has now become completely accustomed to the European way of life. Henry may be about 15 to 18 years old, [...] he has tattoos on his arm and face. He is very eager to learn, friendly, lively and hard-working. He speaks German words fluently, if they do not have too many consonants, especially the r seems to be missing completely.

Johann Gottfried Schadow (1764–1850): „Harry von den Sandwich-Inseln, en face und im Profil nach links“

Am 18. Oktober 1824 berichtete die „Königlich Privilegirte Berlinische Zeitung von Staats- und gelehrten Sachen“ unter der Überschrift „Wissenschaftliche und Kunst-Nachrichten“ über die Reise des preußischen Seehandlungsschiffes „Mentor“:  

Auch für ein ethnographisches Museum, deren Errichtung wir immer noch entgegensehen, ist so manches Merkwürdige mitgekommen; wir bemerkten nur ein leichtes Tanzkleid der Chilesen von Bärengedärm, Zeug von Baumrinden von den Sandwichs-Inseln, Trinkgefäße aus Kürbissen, Fächer aus Pfauenfedern, Helme aus Binsen, Waffen, Angeln und Hausgeräthe verschiedener Art.

Besonderes Interesse aber weckte der „Freiwillige von den Sandwichs-Inseln“, den die Mentor aus Hawaiʻi mitgebracht hatte:

Henry, so wird er gerufen, oder vielmehr: so nennt er sich, kam, als der Mentor dort anlegte, an den Bord, und bat flehentlich, daß man ihn mitnehmen möchte. Man erkundigte sich nach seinen Familien-Verhältnissen, er hatte weder Vater noch Mutter, noch sonst jemanden, der Ansprüche an ihn machte; so ging er mit nach China, und hat sich nun schon ganz an die Europäische Lebensweise gewöhnt. Henry mag ungefähr 15 bis 18 Jahr alt seyn, […] am Arm und im Gesicht ist er tattowirt. Er ist sehr gelehrig, freundlich, munter, arbeitsam. Deutsche Worte spricht er geläufig nach, wenn sie nicht zu viel Consonanten haben, besonders scheint ihm das r ganz zu fehlen.

Dream islands of the South Seas and Prussian trading dreams

Knowledge about the dream islands of the South Seas had already reached German-speaking countries in the last quarter of the 18th century through Georg Forster and Heinrich Zimmermann. The natural scientist and poet Adelbert von Chamisso also came to Hawaiʻi during the Rurik expedition under the command of Otto von Kotzebue in November 1816 and September 1817. Even before his “Remarks and Opinions of the Naturalist of the Expedition” were printed in Weimar in 1821, his observations had already spread in Berlin and his friend E. T. A. Hoffmann published his epistolary novella “Haimatochare” in Berlin in 1819, the first European work of prose set on the Hawaiian island of Oʻahu. Hawaiʻi was therefore not only no longer terra incognita, but already a literary setting when the “Mentor” set sail from Bremen in December 1822.

Trauminseln der Südsee und preußische Handelsträume

Die Kunde von den Trauminseln der Südsee hatte den deutschsprachigen Raum schon im letzten Viertel des 18. Jahrhunderts durch Georg Forster oder Heinrich Zimmermann erreicht. Der Naturforscher und Dichter Adelbert von Chamisso kam während der Rurik-Expedition unter dem Kommando Ottos von Kotzebue im November 1816 und im September 1817 auch nach Hawaiʻi. Noch bevor 1821 seine „Bemerkungen und Ansichten auf einer Entdeckungs-Reise“ in Weimar gedruckt wurden, hatten sich seine Beobachtungen schon in Berlin verbreitet und so veröffentlichte sein Freund E. T. A. Hoffmann 1819 in Berlin mit seiner Briefnovelle „Haimatochare“ das erste europäische Prosastück, das auf der hawaiischen Insel Oʻahu spielt. Hawaiʻi war also nicht nur keine Terra incognita mehr, sondern schon ein literarischer Schauplatz, als sich die „Mentor“ im Dezember 1822 in Bremen auf den Weg machte.

Voyages to the islands of dreams

200 years ago, on October 26, 1824, the Berlin sculptor and draughtsman Johann Gottfried Schadow wrote under one of his drawings: “Harry Sandwich Islands. 26. octob. 1824.” Who was this “Harry” and where are the “Sandwich Islands” actually located? So much can already be revealed: Harry was the first Hawaiian who arrived in Prussia and his home islands are known today as Hawaiʻi – not to be confused with Haiti in the Caribbean.

Reisen zu den Inseln der Träume

Vor 200 Jahren, am 26. Oktober 1824, schrieb der Berliner Bildhauer und Zeichner Johann Gottfried Schadow unter eine seiner Zeichnungen: „Harry Sandwich Inseln. 26. octob. 1824.“ Wer war dieser „Harry“ und wo liegen eigentlich die „Sandwichinseln“? Soviel sei schon verraten: Harry war der erste Hawaiier, der in Preußen ankam und seine Heimatinseln sind heute als Hawaiʻi bekannt – nicht zu verwechseln mit Haiti in der Karibik.

On September 14, 1824, the native Hawaiian Harry Maitey arrived aboard the „Mentor“ in Prussia. In October, the „Vossische Newspaper“ in Berlin reported on him and described the performance of a „hula noho“ (sitting hula). In honor of the first Hawaiiian in Germany the hula dancers of „No ka ho’omana’o ana ia Berlin“ („To commemorate Berlin“, inscription on the Turkish crescent, present for the Hawaiian King David Kalākaua on the occasion of the King’s visit to Berlin) therefore visited on August 2, 2014, Peacock Island, where Maitey had worked since 1830. With traditional chants, songs and dances they remembered the history of Hawaii and the connection of native Hawaiians with nature and their gods. A visit to the grave of Harry Maitey finished the first part of the day. In the afternoon, the group held its „hō’ike“ (Hawaiian: to show) on the former Berlin Tempelhof Airport. For „No ka ho’omana’o ana ia Berlin“ this is an important tradition, because King David Kalākaua at this location attended a parade when he visited Berlin in 1881.

On July 29, 1881, King David Kalākaua arrived in Berlin at the Lehrter Bahnhof, where the main railway station in Berlin is located today. German Emperor William I later sent a „Schellenbaum“ (Turkish crescent) to the King bearing the Hawaiian inscription „no ka hoomanao ana ia Berlin“ (to commemorate Berlin), which was then used by the Royal Hawaiian Band. Hālau Hula „No Ka Hoʻomanaʻo Ana Ia Berlin“ cherishes the long-standing traditions of Hawaiʻi-Berlin connections and particularly honors the memory of Harry Maitey, the first Hawaiian in Prussia, who lived here from 1824 to 1872.

When I drove down the highway towards Kalapana on September 6^th, 2010, it was not the first time that I looked forward to spending a vacation in Kalani. But this time was different, and that became clear as soon as I spotted the plume of Puhi-o-Kalaikini where Pele is fighting with her sister Nāmaka. Never before, since my first visit to Puna in 1993, the ocean entry of a lava flow was so close to Kalapana, and it made me wonder what surprises I could expect during the next month.
